Watch For Fake Google Toolbars!

eWeek brings disturbing news of a new phishing effort posing as a Google toolbar download.

The latest cases involve bogus Google software spread via IM, and appear to be a variety of the infamous CoolWebSearch phishing scheme, according to Foster City-Calif.-based FaceTime Security Labs. CoolWebSearch has never been spread via IM before.

And what happens when you download the fake toolbar?

The only working feature on the fake Google Toolbar saves credit card details, according to Christopher Boyd, the security research manager of Foster City, Calif.-based FaceTime Security Labs. A bevy of others, including one to “enable pornographic ads,” do not work.

The toolbar is being spread by instant messenger, so keep an eye open for them.

Google Combines Maps and Local Search

Michael Liedtke has details of Google’s combining of maps and local search.

The hybrid service blends addresses, phone numbers, maps, driving directions and other details, like user reviews and credit card information, on the same Web page. Google also offers a satellite-mapping option that provides an aerial view.

AOL Buys Weblogs Inc

paidContent is reporting the sale of Weblogs Inc to America Online.

How much will Weblogs Inc. cost AOL? One estimate I heard today was roughly $20 million as an earn-out — to get it all, Weblogs Inc. would have to meet certain goals. But I’ve also heard talk of Flickr-like numbers, which would make it closer to $30-35 million range. Certainly to Weblogs’ execs advantage to have people thinking towards the higher end.

ClickTracks 6 Close to Launch

News from John Marshall that ClickTracks 6 is launching October 12th and it’s packed with new features.

“If you want the best, most meaningful and insightful web analytics software on the market today, you want ClickTracks 6,” said an admittedly biased John Marshall, ClickTracks’ founder and CEO. “We’ve been able to pack so many new ‘wow’ features into this release, it’s practically bursting at the seams!”

Do You Believe This?

Take a look at this chart from eMarketer/MarketingSherpa

I’m obviously a big fan of online marketing, but there is no way that B2C marketers are allocating 56% of their marketing budget for online marketing. 6% maybe, not 56%!!!

eMarketer provides a subtle caveat…

Though undoubtedly skewed somewhat by MarketingSherpa’s readership — including marketers in e-commerce, multichannel retail, travel/hospitality and financial services — the survey’s respondents reported that overall online advertising accounted for a large part of their budgets

“Skewed somewhat”?? How about skewed a WHOLE lot. Oh well, I’m sure us SEMs will use the chart in our proposals to show would-be clients that they need to spend more online and catch-up with their peers. ;-)
