Rob Hof succinctly describes a new service priming for launch called Edgeio.

The way Edgeio works is that bloggers would post items they want to sell right on their blogs, tagging them with the word “listing” (and eventually other descriptive tags). Then, Edgeio will pluck them as it constantly crawls millions of blogs looking for the “listing” tag and index them on

It would be interesting to see if this could be a threat to eBay. Instead of going to one central site (eBay) to list your useless junk, just post it on your own site and let Edgeio come to you.

So how will Edgeio make money?

Edgeio plans to charge Powersellers 25 cents a day to buy top positions on the page for their local listings. Later, Edgeio plans to run contextual ads, possibly Google’s AdSense, to let local sellers run ads on the right column. And third, as prospective buyers subscribe to Edgeio RSS feeds for products they’re interested in, those lists of prospects could be sold as qualified leads to sellers.

    If they can develop a value proposition (beyond aggregation) where they rep advertisers in the market, then they will be a partner. I’m assuming that this will be the case.

    Having said that, we will directly index classified listings that are posted in blogs. That’s one of the reasons we help submit a draft microformat specification called hListing. Such a standard would enable any blogging platform to product a post that is cleary identified as a listing (and could appropriately indexed as such).

    An alpha version of an open source plug-in for WordPress was already produced against the proposed spec — Am also talking to someone who plans to do the same for Movable Type.
