InfoSpace Restructures Mobile Business, 250 Layoffs

Not all news in the mobile space is positive. ClickZ is reporting Infospace is having to layoff 250 employees after losing a large partnership deal.

Beginning this week and continuing into next year, the company plans to eliminate 250 positions, mainly in its mobile content business. The company announced last month that Cingular, its largest ringtone distributor, would begin to enter licensing agreements directly with record labels instead of using InfoSpace as a middleman.

    The Mobile space is eerily following the same path as the Internet. I would calle dthe current state ‘Internet 1998′. Lot of new companies, lots of VC money, lots of acquisition and consolidation. All we need now is the eventual implosion and sorting out the winners and losers..but that’s not until ‘Internet 2000′ :)

    It will be interesting to see if the Mobile Industry’s answer to Google will emerge from one of the small players, or if Google will be the next Google :P
