[...] I have to be honest and say that this article is amazing. From start to finish it read clear as crystal and was entertaining to boot! You also demonstrated your insights without confusing the reader which to me is worth its “weight” in gold. Jordan, you really should look into writing freelance style for ClickZ or other SEO “informationals.” Send them this article and see what they think. Anyways, you’ve definitely got my O.K. [...]

ACTUALLY, SEO is more than gaining traffic, only a novice "SEO" would think to stop at getting traffic to the site. Of course the main goal for an expert in the field includes everything from getting the qualified traffic to the site, optimizing the landing page, AND leading that user toward the end means - being that a newsletter sign up, purchase or other info capturin device.

Also, most clients are not knowledgable about SEO and what it entails. They do not understand search engines, traffic, analytics they pay an expert to know that for them. Clients generally only understand numbers and results that suit them.

You shouldn't wait until your client "finds out" how you're doing. You should be upfront. SEO takes time. It's not going to make a huge difference on day one. Optimization requires time, diligence, and data analysis so the expert knows what needs to be done.

Conversion should be the focus. I must ask, what did you think the focus would be otherwise?

While I do not agree with point 1's explanation I do agree with 2 and 3. These should be standard practicce and anyone with client experience should know this.

[...] So the votes are in and Most SEOs are Virgins received 630 unique views over a seven day period. With the first weeks winner receiving 385 views and the second weeks winner having 108, you would think I would be a sure win. Nope! I lost by 3 visits. That’s right, SEO is Pointless (But You Don’t Have to Tell Your Clients) received 633 unique visits. What a heart breaker. [...]

Jordan's article rings true! You have to pay attention to what your client is really paying for - not traffic. They want conversions which generally means a sale, but could be a completed form, or a some other metric. SEO has to give them what they want.
