Google Claims Click Fraud is Less than 10%

6

SiliconRepublic.com has a report from a Google press briefing in Dublin last week. During the briefing, Shuman Ghosemajumder, business product manager for trust and safety at Google lashed out at the firms that claim click fraud could be as high as 20%.

According to Ghosemajumder, “Some firms appear to make the problem larger than it is,” and the claims are “exaggerated”. He goes on to say that click fraud at Google is “on average is in the single digits, quarter over quarter.”

click fraud at Google is on average in single digits quarter on quarter.

So, if the click fraud on the true long tail is near zero, then Mr Ghosemajumder has basically confirmed that for the high-cost, most competitive, ‘head terms’ it must indeed be likely to be 20% or higher.

It is rare to see anyone from Google (other than the CEO) make such a complete mess of public relations. To me, this reads as basically admitting that certain search terms are almost certain to have click-fraud in excess of 20%, otherwise the average across the entire system should be in percentile points, not single digits.
