MyBlogLog Straining Under the Load?

You may have noticed that I have again removed the MyBlogLog widget.

Over the weekend, I noticed – as did others – that MP was taking far too long to load. After a quick analysis using the nifty OctaGate SiteTimer, I managed to isolate the offending item. The MyBlogLog widget.

Here’s a snapshot showing the widget taking almost six seconds to load.

I email the MyBlogLog team to see if a server had gone down again, but have not heard back as of yet. I’m not the only one that appears to be affected, TechCrunch was having the same issue and Michael Arrington has removed the MBL widget too.

LinkedIn Raises Another $13m, What Are They Planning?

Michael Arrington has news that business social network LinkedIn has secured another $12.8 million in financing.

LinkedIn has seen great growth, with $10 million in revenue in 2006 – impressive for any social network – and the successful launch of LinkedIn Answers. So, the question is, with that type of success, what do they need the money for?

Clearly they have plans to roll-out new features but would they need $13m for that? Maybe they’re looking to make an acquisition, which is what my money would be on.

Not All Google Referrals Are Search Related

Although the new Marketing Pilgrim Job Board is only a few hours old - awww, look at him, he has his father’s eyes – I’m already digging into the referral stats.

One thing I’ve noticed – and had noticed before with this site – is that not all Google referrals equate to search engine traffic.

I use both web logs and Google analytics to keep track of my traffic, but GA is the one I use for drilling-down into data. When looking at referral traffic for Google, I often see “google” sending me a lot of good traffic numbers. Over the past few months, I’ve also noticed an increase in the number of visits from “google.com”.

Mashable Gets New Look

I always thought Mashable had a fresh, clean look to it. Pete Cashmore’s decided it needs more of a Web 3.0 feel and has launched a new design.

The new look is great and clearly Pete’s looking to provide more bang-for-the-buck to his advertisers, by adding eight 125×125 slots – which is becoming the norm these days. I am however, curious about why he pushed some navigation and contact info to the footer, and left about 150px wide of space in the left sidebar.

Overall, very nice. And, btw, the content is equally impressive. If you want to keep up with the social networking space, add Mashable to your list of feeds.

OneBox Showing Wikipedia Entries

On the heals of many webmasters declaring that Wikipedia gets too much Google love, Rubel has scooped Google showing Wikipedia results in the OneBox.

I am very disappointed with this move by Google. Just as the use of DMOZ has turned into a joke, so shall the use of Wikipedia. It’s only a matter of time. All Google is doing is inflating the egos of Nazi editors who deny factual information while allowing misinformation to remain. I can just hear the chest thumping now from my down stairs 13 year old editor neighbor.

Disclaimer to all you trusting people, please ignore the following few lines because it’s tin foil hat time. Does the NoFollow changes recently made by Wikipedia have anything to do with the OneBox change? Was it a private arrangement with Google?

Announcing the Marketing Pilgrim Job Board for Internet Marketing Jobs

Tomorrow will see the official launch of Marketing Pilgrim’s Job Board. Those of you tuning-in today, are getting the news before the press release goes out.

For many years, I’ve received emails from recruiters, asking me to recommend someone for an open position. I’ve also had many marketers contact me with their resume, asking if I know of any company hiring. Finally the light-bulb went on and, thanks to a partnership with JobThread.com, I’ve launched a job board dedicated to online marketing careers.

Helping us with the launch are jobs listings from Microsoft, iProspect, High Rankings, SEO Inc, Channel Advisor, The Rimm-Kaufman Group and Fox Interactive Media.

Speaking at Search Summit Australia

I had a chance to spend two weeks in Australia, back in 2005. It was supposed to be a “once-in-a-lifetime” trip.

Well, eighteen months later, I’m delighted to be heading back to beautiful Sydney to speak at Search Summit, March 1st and 2nd.

The event is sure to be a huge hit, and any search marketer in Australia or New Zealand, should mark it on their calendar. Not only does the event offer two packed days of informative sessions, but over 40 speakers will give 90+ presentations on everything from best practices to growing your firm.
