This week the Australian Financial Review reported an interesting development: Google has bulked up its Australian operation and is continuing to expand.
When Google opened its Australian offices in Sydney one year ago, they were working well below their capacity with only a few dozen employees occupying a huge space that could fit well over 100. (perhaps in anticipation of a new Google cafeteria?)
The search giant has increased its Australian staff to more than 100, and is seeking at least 80 more. It needs employees in all areas, from technical gurus focused on operations IT and engineering to advertising sales and marketing types. However, the company said it had no ceiling for talented engineers in particular.’
This interest in engineers is shown on Google’s official Australian blog, which has posts about software engineering at Google, and opportunities for students and graduates. They have also been putting out a call in the Unites States for talented engineers to come to Australia.
Google’s rivals downunder are also in expansion mode with Sensis seeking 50 employees to add to its staff of 3000 and Yahoo!7 trying to fill about 13 positions. NineMSN is also in the hunt for 9 positions. (in Australia both Yahoo! and MSN are in joint ventures with local media companies – thus the different names.)
So start practising your surfing, beer drinking and crocodile wrestling, as there may be an opportunity for you in the land of Oz..
