Don’t panic, the bottom didn’t just fall out of the search engine optimization industry, it’s still very much healthy. In fact, as DotSauce is reporting that the domain name SEO.com just sold for $5 million!!!
Mike Mann is a prominent internet entrepreneur who sold BuyDomains company a few years ago for more than $65 million. His latest tech venture is just that, a venture capital firm based in Washington D.C. which goes by the name of WashingtonVC.
Yesterday Mann announced the purchase of SEO.com by WashingtonVC for $5 million as well as the formation of an SEO firm led by Dave Bascom. The company is formerly known as Web Targeted, search engine optimization company located in Utah. Jay mentions this new domain will give them a huge advantage over the fierce competition of Search Engine Optimizers.
What do you think, worth the price? I know that SEO.com will likely bring immediate brand recognition, but it’s not going to guarantee they’ll be sitting on the top of Google’s results (Wikipedia will see to that).

UPDATE: Mike Mann has emailed us to say “none of the terms of sale for any of the companies is accurate.” He didn’t say it hadn’t sold, so I guess we can assume just the numbers were off.

The way I look at it is an asset that will only go up in value. Even if they had paid $10 million dollars, it would still be worth the money in the long run. Even is the SEO firm behind SEO.com fails, the domain will still be worth more than they paid for it in the future.

[...] I just found out that Dave Bascom’s Web Targeted was sold to WashingtonVC who was able to acquire the domain name SEO.com for $5 Million. Dave seemed pretty excited about this news on his blog, and I am happy for him. He is a great guy and a very knowledgeable Search Engine Optimizer. They have gotten a bit of exposure (and will probably get more) from this news in the SEO blogosphere. I have found commentary on Search Engine Land, Marketing Pilgrim, and Threadwatch, which are three very popular online destinations for SEOs. It is cool to hear this news happening in Utah (I am from Utah in case you haven’t figured that out). [...]

agree with you.
however, to VC, the brand value is much larger than SERP of google.

[...] A pretty good investment Whoever said you can’t make anything on domain names is a nut! Sure all of the really really good ones are already taken…but what about just the ’single realy’ good ones? My mind is boggled after reading about Kevin Hamms recent trip to an auction where he spent $650,000 and only a 3-4 ‘ok’ (I thought) names and the reading that last week Mike Mann bought SEO.com $5 million!!! Too much money for a domain i think. I really do not understand the benefit of spending all that money for a single domain.
