Digg for Greens = Hugg

Here’s a niche social network you’ve probably never heard of – it’s like Digg for environmentally friendly stories. That means you can vote for stories and try to promote them to the top of the list. Hugg is a green version of Digg and they even tout that in their of their taglines – It’s Digg for Green. If you go there you’ll find environmentally friendly stories videos, and links. Plus you can share green information with the community of other like-minded [tree] Huggers.

So far the community looks small. The first story is “Top 10 Amazing Facts about Animals.” This is a niche community which is perfect if your business or blog fits. Google loves relevant links, so it’s a great way to get a targeted link and the site has a PageRank of 6. There should be a niche community like this for more topics.

If you’re an internet marketer, social media sites can be gold mines. They provide a way for you to interact with your target market and get feedback. And, like I already mentioned, you can get valuable backlinks to your site.

Hugg has been online since 2000, just a few months after Digg started. I punched the number in Alexa and the traffic rank for Digg is 11 and for Hugg it’s 49,145.

Please let me know other niche social networks you participate in or know about. Wikipedia has a list of social networking sites but I’m sure it’s not exhaustive.

Hat tip to Mat.

I’ve been working on a similar style site for Minnesota based blog and news content – anything with an RSS feed – called Walleye.mn. All communities that have a shared interest in a select set of news or blog sources will probably end up with something like this.

I wonder if there’s a list of Digg clones that end in “gg” ;-)

    Ed,
I like your idea to make a localized Digg- stories relating to a place. The name however isn’t quite right. Maybe you should consider calling it Migg.
