Search Engine Land points to a video of a recent Q&A with Google’s Page and Brin. As part of Google’s annual closed-doors partner conference, journalist James Fallows throws them a bunch of questions.
It’s Friday afternoon, and I have other commitments, but if you watch the video, leave a comment with any juicy quotes you hear. I’ll give a condom-free link to those that share the most interesting ones! ![]()
PS. I’ll be checking for fictitious quotes.
Susan says “Here’s my favorite quote from Sergey Brin, because it is soooo SEO”
“I think that one of the things that ends to really decrease the utility of sites is when they maybe go a little bit overboard on the fanciness with javascript and flash stuff flying around. That has 2 negative effects. One is that it’s actually harder for users, it might slow down your computer, you might be on iphone or some other device that can’t deal with the really fancy stuff ……
And it does make it somewhat harder for our search engine to parse through all the stuff to find out what’s the real information on the site. I would kind of just try to discourage people. Use new technologies when it really makes sense and there is some really really good reason for it. We do that for example with maps with fancy javascript, but only if there is a very good reason. Try to keep things as simple as possible.”

A good one from each in the first 6 minutes:
Sergey (on scalability):
“We’ve been trying to change the paradigm from products to features…”
[ed: I always thought we should change to benefits.]
Larry (on democratization of the news – oy!)
“…really interesting to me to watch the blogger vs reporter debate….do a much better job of as industry to make the professionals more productive…One of the nice things about blogging is bloggers link to each other…when I read [the] New York Times article, it doesn’t link to the Wall Street Journal article.”
[and he managed to slip the word "paradigm" in a short while later]

These guys are engineers?
Larry Page: In Europe they use twice the voltage then the us so it’s like double the power.
Sergey Brin replaced his 60 Watt light bulbs with 10 Volt compact fluorescents.
It’s no wonder they haven’t solved the power consumption issue yet.
Saying that kind of crap will get you laughed out of high school shop class.

Sergey says “fancy javascript and flash is harder for users” (pertaining to a question on how to better serve content for Google.)
Hmm perhaps b/c your bot cannot crawl it? Is it really harder for users or is it harder for Google BOT

Comments like “Education is the key” and “how we want to manage privacy ourselves online” lead me to imagine that google is none too keen to have the state regulate or assign guidelines for the functioning of the internet in general and perhaps search engines in particular.

I’m definately getting rid of the flash on my site. The SE’s can’t read it and the pages don’t index correctly.
