It’s rare to find a TV commercial worthy of sharing with Marketing Pilgrim readers–unless you count Ask.com’s Chicks With Swords.
Anyway, thanks to Paul Woolmington, I can share this great Cadbury’s ad from the UK.
Enjoy!
So, what does it all mean? Here’s what Cadbury has to say

Haha Thats great.
But I think thats one of those cases where they absolutely fail to connect the product to the ad, in any shape or form. Is that going to make me buy a cadbury chocolate bar? Probably not.

@Brian - it’s interesting that you should say that. Woolmington asked the same thing and then vaguely suggested that perhaps it’s all about the passion.
UK ads often focus on building buzz for the ad-rather than the actual brand. If you discuss the ad, you’ll likely remember the brand.
Still, he’s a funky gorilla nonetheless.

Just added some notes from Cadbury about the ad.

The viral nature of an ad like that and the buzz that it can create helps raise the brand above all the other chocolate bars in the market. Its a brave product manager who actually runs with something like this and thats because if the ad fails you’re likely taking a few steps backwards in your career path.

@andy
“building buzz for the ad-rather than the actual brand.”
I figured this was exactly what they were going for. Figures a british co. would be a little more progressive in doing something like this.

HA, so true.

That’s one of the best TV commercial I’ve seen in a while. I don’t watch TV too often though, lol.

The proof of the chocolate is in eating it! Is the gorilla drumming up business for Cadburys? Their comment took some courage!

It’s a great ad and one that we’ve written quite a lot about (I won’t bore you with a link!)
It’s by the same guys who have done the Sony balls (& paint & now bunnies); they’ve definitely got a knack of getting clients to take a risk…
