They could have added the application an online reservation system based on SMS messages. So, you could make your reservation when you learn a restaurant or hotel near you.

Actually, yellowpages is just following Apple's lead. All iPhone optimized web sites are actually referred to as 'web applications' or web apps, for short. They're Web 2.0 applications. Check it out on Apple's site at www.apple.com/webapps -- lotta good stuff there.

Thanks for the clarification, guys. The confusion has probably stemmed from the fact that YellowPages refers to their iPhone-ready site as an "application" in the release.

There has been a lot of confusion over this today. This is only a downloadable app for 20 model phones - not including the iphone.

For the iphone, as suggested by emad, it is a mobile website accessible by the safari browser, that users have to navigate to in order to use.

This could change in early '08 when the iphone releases it's SDK to the developer community to develop apps that users can download directly to their iphone home screens.

Until then, emad is right that you can only download apps to unlocked devices. And that is only being done by a small segment of tech savvy individuals.

In the meantime all of the innovation for mobile local search products for the iphone have to reside on the mobile web and be accessed through safari.

More details about the these distinctions are here:

"Now, is it just me, or does forcing your users to go to your website kind of defeat the purpose of creating a downloadable web app?"

iPhones, unless they've been unlocked, do not allow you to download/install an application. Instead, you access their website which has been specifically built for the iPhone.
