@ Minicx..

I was going to say something else in response to this post..but I never thought of the possibility, which you mention.

If Google tries this and it goes "kerplunk", it will be the first chink in the seemingly impenetrable armour of this behemoth.

If on the other hand it succeeds, I think we could be looking at the birth of "Web 3.0". It also might be a time to think of buying Google Shares.

It may not be the sexy GPhone announcment that every wants to hear but certainly a much more intelligent entry into the market. Unlike others who have sough to own pieces of the mobile market where they had no expertise or experience (yes, I am looking at you ESPN and Disney) they have partnered with leaders in the value chain and are focusing on what they are good at. And with open source, they are, in typical Google style, rocking an industry in long need of a wake-up call.

You can have your GPhone, I am more comfortable with an LG or Motorola device stuff with useful (and controllable) applications from third parties running off a unified platform.

Of course, the only downside is the carrier affiliation to Sprint and T-Mobile - not exactly the premier carriers on the planet. Once again, it looks like Verizon has stuck it's head in the sand in hopes that all the iPhone and Android innovation will just go away.

It's about time someone created an opensource mobile platform. I think we'll all benefit. The more developers with the ability to create apps the better. I think it's difficult to know where to start with the numerous systems used currently.
