Yeah, we have thought about product placement as well. P have been a big fan of pay per click, but may start sending money in that direction.

I like what Piper said and I would much rather go looking for a good blog to put my advertisement in. I am a college student so my motivation for not paying to put an advertisement in a paid blog is because I don’t have the money to do it. I am not against product placement in the least and I don’t think it is the big bad meanie everyone makes it out to be. If I were to place an ad online I believe that with today’s techno world blogs would probably be the place to do it. Everyone likes to blog and leave there own opinion on the web, it is also a way to connect to everyone.

Paul, i think this is what krista was trying to say. if you use PPP, then they are not genuinely interested about blogging about the product, but does it anyway because they are paid. if you find a product first and then blog about it, i'm sure the readers will sooner or later see right through you and realize you are not sincerely writing your posts and they will lose trust.

Hey Jake,

Product placement in a blog is an interesting idea. I'm curious though, how did you go about getting your advertisers on board for this article?

I mean most blog articles are reactions or analysis of recent news. If I see something interesting I want to blog about, I'm going to blog about it right away while the news is fresh and the topic hasn't already been blogged to death. It doesn't seem feasible to then go out and start contacting companies that might fit for a product placement, explain the concept, close the deal, and publish the article the same day.

Or are you finding companies that want product placement first and then finding something related to blog about?

We're nuts about Product Placement, but prefer to use in-text advertising like SnapShots, Kontera or JargonFish on our own blog.

I agree with Jaan. While their campaigns still appear to have an effect, it's very obvious that Google is able to figure out which sites are using PPP, so I would definitely avoid spending much money there unless you want to appear on lots of low quality sites (at least in my experience, I can't speak for all) and use nofollow tags.

I'd much rather spend a little extra time locating good blogs in my niches and building real relationships instead of just randomly buying my way into a bunch of sites that don't necessarily get the audience I'm looking for.

Hi Jake - Interesting post.

There is actually a company that does this - PayPerPost (now Izea). Marketers can post opportunities for both reviews or just mentions (ie. product placements). PayPerPost is extremely controversial in the bloggosphere since many see it as misleading and buying opinion. I think that product placement in blogs is difficult since many blogs are personal and pseudo-journalistic. Getting paid to mention or say something with or without disclosure breaks trust with readers. If I read your post and saw that you were paid for the statement, I would wonder if you had ever even been to that resturant....

As a marketer I would rather create a great product and invest in PR and Community Building to create genuine and passionate product mentions/reviews than pay for a placement.

Not that I have anything against product placement, but I don't think that blogs are the right medium for it.

Just my two cents.
