Anne Hennegar has noticed something’s not quite right about the Google Site Links for the San Jose Mercury News–one of the links points to an advertiser.

I’m sure Fry’s is delighted, but does this help the user experience?
(How did this happen? Likely Google mistook the ad link–which runs through a mercurynews redirect–as a navigational link for the site)

wow thats crazy. I just checked ours - they are still correct. But in all likelihood there must be a lot of links pointing to that fry’s page - or something to make google add it.

Great find. Could be the start of a whole new SEO industry: get listed in your competitors listing
. Just finished checking all my clients search results. Seems to be an isolated problem

Andy,
I wouldn’t automatically assume that they are broken just by having that as part of the sitelinks.
If you look at the other sitelinks, they have “newspaper ads online” as part of them, which leads you only to another ads portion of the site.
The “Fry’s” part is just an advertisement on their site.
Sure, things are a little wonky, but I wouldn’t say they are “broken” straight up.

IMO
As Matt pointed out, it’s because there are a lot or quality links pointing to that page (section) somewhere; it’s either a good job of internal link structure and deep linking or a bad one!
Yeah I bet Fry’s is happy - they’ve probably just been on the site constantly for a long time?

Maybe google sold a text link ad or some sort of advertiser’s real estate. Haha you know there are talks about Google being biased or selling off prime real estate!

It is weird… maybe they didn’t have enough content.

Don’t see anything weird about it at all consider Fry’s is the first link in the shopping section of the home page, on the right hand side.
