Greg, Very nice.

I think #4 is the best. Finding ways to stay positive can be very hard for many. Many people have personal issues that outweigh the good. One must learn to overcome them.

The debt is also another problem. But I feel if you stay positive it can help with your mental state dealing with the debt.

Wise words Greg.

I have noticed recently the number of enquiries from startups has dropped considerably. This could be down to a number of reasons: The domino effect from the US, the tax increase for small businesses and fixed-rate mortgages are being phased out.

Luckily I have no debt and work from home so no overheads.

With the cost of fuel and motoring escalating (amongst all the other increases...) and traffic congestion increasing all the time one will find more and more people turning to online retailing to save on many levels. This time should prove to be a good one for us internet types, but am cautious as to the prospects ordinary retailers face.

Yeah there are ways to survive and flourish during a recession - we're looking for them!

#3 is a huge point

I've seen so many businesses tighten up so much that it actually hurts sales and doesn't promote repeat business. In addition, tightening up can decrease productivity (in some cases) and employee moral.

It's much more important to focus on making more money IMO.

The not over-tightening part is so important. I've talked to a few people who have all but stopped their profitable PPC campaigns out of fear. It makes absolutely no sense to me.

Thanks for sharing your business experience...I would say that I am proud to your struggle spirit. You didn't decide to quit too early so you could get your big customer and even exponentially profit increasement. I learn somethings here.

Thanks for the great tips Greg. by the way i used to work retail in the mall. What a boring time to be in that world again in these times. All in all staying positive will keep us from jumping out the window.

Great tips! When the going gets tough..the tough gets going! Companies can't lose sight of their initial goals and must push forward during an unsteady economy for sure. We definitely agree with Nicole's comment above.

Throughout history, the most successful businesses invested in the future when business was in a downswing. This enabled them to be ready and waiting when demand started surging. This is an aspect that most businesses neglect or loath to risk investment on.
