Just how many mergers and takeovers can even Microsoft handle?

I think one of the biggest challenges that Microsoft faces is its own management model. It's one, I believe that evolved in a vacuum when they had a monopoly. But I think that it came with a chauvinism that has prevented them from evolving in a way best suited for where the web and consumer technology is going, and that's probably why they've had so many troubles in both their online ventures and negotiations with other companies.

They're probably just pushing a business mindset that's (1) incompatible with other companies' models, and (2) just rubbing other execs the wrong way at the table. It's probably why the Yahoo deal didn't work out.

@Michelle - I agree. As long as they leave the brand and experience in tact, I doubt many would leave Facebook because MSFT acquired it.

The majority of Marketing Pilgrim readers may hate Microsoft, but the majority of Facebook users could honestly care less. They just want to be able to keep up with their friends and FB is a good tool for doing so.

If anything, someone may try to build another platform just to spite Microsoft. Who knows.

I'm a Microsoft fan, but they have problems with public image for obvious reasons. I think their purchase of Facebook would drive aways users and kill the site's value almost immediately.

The schizophrenic nature of these diverse acquisition efforts only tells me that Microsoft has no clear strategic direction and is spooked by the threat of Google (much like Verizon was during the recent spectrum auction). They just seem to be wanting to grab up sexy properties in hot markets and hoping to figure out "why" later.

Facebook would never go for it. What makes Microsoft think they would take an offer when Facebook turned down Yahoo. Zuckerburg is going to hold on as long as he can in order to offer the most value to the users ( and make a good advertising model).

Microsoft must have some targeted ad system that is not as creepy as beacon. Any ad on Facebook would have to be targeted, useful, and rather inconspicuous to prevent other platforms from popping up and stealing users.
