@PS3 let's take my example. My company makes a product that is open source and runs on Linux. I do a search via Google for "Linux submit news" and open+source+submit+news and start seeing what sites come up. I found Linux.com has a Submit a Story link. I submit new original news and content there. I see your site is about gaming so I did a search for "ps3 submit news" they have a share news link for their community members. I am sure the same gos for knitting, Nascar, or fishing try it with your topic and actually spend some time figuring out which portals are appropriate for you. Even participating there and having a link in your community profile can be a helpful way to build links providing you are adding value in their community.

"search Google for your keywords plus “Submit News” to find them"

I've never thought of doing this either....well, in fact, I am a bit confused. It's late here, what exactly is the "Submit news to find them" bit? What do I need to do?

Sorry for being incredible dim!

I find Digg incredibly useful in terms of backlinks because people like to blog about things they find on the front page but the actual traffic is quite terrible. The bounce rate tends to be near 100%. This is a great article that will make people think before they launch another campaign.

This is a great list and has a good deal of advice that I've never come across before. I've found using sites such as digg and stumbleupon has the potential to bring a lot of traffic but normally this traffic isn't highly targetted since people literally "stumblupon" your site instead of being actively looking for it.

Although one must think of the keywords they wish to target, writing for the search engine is not a good idea. You should write for the audience first and foremost.

Cheers,
John

Thanks for this excellent summary and tutorial Mark. We are finding that Twitter is an excellent way to drive traffic to our website. And, it's amazing who you find following you. I never expected to engage with so many tech bloggers and journalists so quickly. It's the virtual equivalent of walking into the press lounge at a hot tradeshow 15 years ago. Will try HeySpread next week as we launch our Test Methodology video series for www.breakingpointlabs.com.
