What camera you are using? I used Canon 40D to take some pictures in pubcon conference 2007 that turned out well in dark also. You just need to use a tripod and get into the manual settings if you are using a professional camera. I have seen you using a compact one in the conference so i guess there wont be a lot you can do with that but get closer to the object as much as possible rather than zooming in. I hope this helps.
@San & Goran - I was using a Nikon D40 with a 18-200 lens. Took a while to figure out the correct balance between flash power and ISO, but I finally got it.
