Like anyone that uses a social networking tool on a frequent basis, I’ve become accustomed to the way Twitter looks and operates. So, when the company–without warning–changed the design, I had the typical knee-jerk reaction: Nooooooooo!

Just when I knew exactly where everything was and how it worked, Twitter made sweeping changes–apparently without consulting with its users first. I’ve not seen too many Tweets showing delight for the new navigation location.

But, I’m not naive. Despite Twitter doing its best to push these features as huge benefits for its users–perhaps we’ll learn to love them–these changes are not about us. Nope, they’re about Twitter’s ability to grow and remain stable in the process. Here’s the statement to that effect:

But more importantly, it was an investment in the future. We plan to have more tabs, and we’d run out of room putting them along the top. This was the driving factor for this redesign, but you won’t see all the benefits until a future release (hopefully, very soon!).

  • I like the re-design…I think they could go even further with the Ajax-y stuff as well. We need to keep this in perspective, after all Twitter is still a 1.0 product. Having said that, and as I’ve blogged about in the past the Twexutives there should spend one day on video/tutorials for newbies. That would go a long way for the many who sign up and then say “I don’t get it”…

  • Like Andy, I also enjoy the new design. If for no other reason, the top-right design showing the statistics of people followed, followers, and updates looks classier. I also never used the “archive” tab, opting for the various search applications.

  • I like the new design too. What I don’t like is them rolling it out with out warning. Twitter should take a lesson from Facebook.

  • @Joe – I agree, they should have consulted with users–or at least made it look like they cared. 😉

  • I personally favor Plurk to Twitter. While it does not have the user base of Twitter I have found it to be more rewarding because of it nested responce format.

  • I’d have to say I like it. At first I thought it was my eyes playing tricks on me, but then I saw the little box at the top corner telling me about the changes.

    Although I can see where you might feel that the benefits are more for Twitter as opposed to its users (at present, anyhoo), I would also suggest that to get to the point where Twitter can make the real benefits for its users it needs to have a stable environment first. Just look at the amount of times the over-Twittered message popped up! 😉

    Still, it definitely would have been nice to know or at least get a heads up first. Would have saved me a trip to the optician’s… 😉

    I find the new design awesome. Except for one key issue… It doesn’t work at all in Opera Mini. No ability to post. No ability to reply. No ability to fave.

    I really hope they fix this, because the mobile site has such poor usability, it too is unusable.

  • I like it, but I don’t use it much. The best thing about Twitter is that you can get a lot out of it without ever going to the site. So it’s fine with me.

  • I stumbled on the new design on the night of its release after not being on Twitter for a few hours. After jumping back on Twitter its seems that the general consensus is positive. I definitely can’t say the same for Facebook. While I’ve been using (and liking) the new Facebook interface throughout the Beta period, the majority of people I’ve talked to about it after the official launch have not adjusted too well.

    Guess you can’t please everyone on the road to product improvement.

  • Hey the fact that 2 types are on twitter one who post meaningless dribble about going to work then going home and then going to sleep and the other type who uses tweets to build their brand.

    “Change” rules why not accept that and grow forward and stop wishing for the past to stay the same in the tomorrow.

  • I am new to the whole twitter and social networking thing, but it seems to be cool. Besides, social networking is a while lot better than paying for advertising when you are selling a product.

    I still have to check the design out. What other social networking things are out there like twitter or better?

  • i do hope that a way is found for twitter to work with opera mini. i rather liked the idea of being able to update on my mobile phone using that browser.

    the new design looks better. but i’ll have to see if any other usability issues crop up.
