I don't know if this could be taken as valid, but my googling around found this: http://www.multilingual-search.com/global-search-report-2007-released-free-pdf/15/10/2007
that's where I've found about neti.ee - but I can (shall) doublecheck.

Thanks for catching the Seznam error; I thought I fixed that.

I still think that there IS a sense of national pride in knowing that one's local search engine is better and more popular than Google which continues to feed on itself.

The above engines aren't the only local search engines in the world; there are hundreds. But according to FT's metrics, they are the only ones beating Google in popularity. Does neti.ee beat Google in Estonia? I'm not seeing anything in the Google results to suggest that.

It is Seznam, not Ceznam for Czech rep. And it is not about nationalism, but Google simply didn't enter the market before way too many people start to think: Seznam=Internet Search. Also the localization of Google services was slow and often not very well made. Plus - to be honest I don't think these are the only countries. For example just a bit digging (using Google :) revealed 6th player: neti.ee for Estonia. And I guess Yandex might beat Google in other post-soviet countries, not only in Russia.

What I guess it doesn't matter to Google as it is well said "the rest of the world is doing well". The money, time and effort required for the scope available has list importance for Google. It has already 70%+ search market with it.

Me too first movers can flourish in local markets, but I cannot but help admire Google for what they have achieved. They have become generic.

I can't see it has anything to do with content. My guess is that the big G failed to target these other countries simply because the revenue streams wouldn't be as good.
