Wow, is this really all because of a rumor? It's funny how people will believe anything these days. They need to stop being ignorant and verify their facts first.

There are several issues of importance contained in this CNN story.
CNN is a main stream news organization. As such it should be
conducting itself in a professional manner. It is not standard journalistic procedure to post any news story with out the input from independent corroborative sources. The scandal rags do business this
way and are frequently sued for their carelessness.
It is quite revealing that CNN characterised the inaccurate news report as fraudulent. Can you say, “back peddling into major damage control mode“.

To the credit of the internet. It is one of the most free places on the planet. Another old but true saying is, “with freedom comes responsibility.” In this case we might also add accountability to apple, and the general public.

I do not quite see how this can be remotely called damage to reputation. This is obviously a ploy to get the share price to move down so that some pickings could be had. Whoever played the game, knew very well that he is taking a big risk and would have taken sufficient precautions.

I saw this earlier on TechCrunch... I wonder if its just somebody trying to make a quick dollar. Start a rumor, wait for the stock to plummet, buy up while its low, and well, profit.

Well, unfortunately with the online world, you really can't protect yourself from anyone who wants to tarnish your reputation. This is the downside of the internet. What you could do is right many, many, good reports and good reviews about yourself and/or your website and submit them to article directories.
