Thought you should know that Diane Hessan and her colleagues at Communispace just started a blog called Verbatim. Check it out for more insights into this topic and more around listening - http://blog.communispace.com/

More evidence of the "echo chamber" that is Twitter and blogs. It's easy to feel like everyone is on Twitter when that's all you monitor all day.

Don't forget that 99.999% of the entire world lives outside yours.

Of course it is more important to those who are using the media. Social media aint important until the outcry is published in printed media. Newspapers are still better and still have a lot more impact than social media and probably will have for quite some time.
And on a similar note most people do not use social media. With all the hoopla Twitter has gotten how many people actually use it? Same with Facebook. Is registering an account the same as being active and involved with all the crap that is published and discussed?
Does your target market even use social media? And how large percentage?

But whatever hoopla that is going on in backyard that is the social media the age old advice "Think first act later" is always good to follow.
