Interesting read, although I'm altogether surprised at the results, Yahoo appears fairly static in terms of development, and the bewilderment around LiveSearch and Kumo must be confusing, so it's little wonder that Google, a company which never stands still, continues to dominate the market.
What can possibly challenge them? Well perhaps the acquisition of Summize by Twitter is an indicator of where things are heading. Already Twitter is usurping Google in the quest for real time news, as evidenced by the Hudson River crash where the first news of it appeared on Twitter, before any of the usual media outlets. Having now created their own search engine it is possible that Twitter will begin to eat into Google's share, at least for searches relating to real time news and new product news. Similarly, Facebook has now undergone cosmetic surgery and has begun to mimic the behaviour of Twitter, how long before it also develops it's own search facility.

Google is definitely the Godzilla of search engines. There is no competition for them at all. Yahoo, 2nd place, is no where near Google's percentage.

Wasn't it Google that complained about Microsoft's monopoly in browsers? Maybe Microsoft should retrench and do what they've done best and then just complain about Googles dominance in search. What's interesting to me is that Microsofts search isn't so bad. I would almost just like to see an msn-search page than the yahoo-looking thing they have now. The problem is that they're not upping the ante. So why switch? It isn't too hard to imagine a Google like search that delivers a better result. Why isn't someone doing it? The answer is keyword advertising revenue.

Even in Europe I can see Google not dominating for ever Steen. The danger for Google particularly comes as people increasingly spend their time on sites such as Twitter or Facebook.

Suppose one of them were to start offering results from across the internet via their own site's search box (either sourced from their own tools or from a rival of Google's). That could have a dramatic impact on Google's search engine market share - and is one of the reasons why I think their continued dominance isn't a sure thing.

The figures are very much different in Europe where the Google market share is more tahn 90% in many countries. In Germany the picture is even more cleat, as Google has a market share of 98%.

So in Europe she search engine battle is over ... we almost only have Google!
