Very Good!

I would have to say this is a very good marketing stunt to gather twitters. Surely I was brought into it too just disagree with you. I'm sure many people reply by self or automated systems such as tweetlater.com or such. Anyway, another collected twitter person for you. Later

very interesting research, i always thought that people like to be replied because it shows that people care for them. i almost always replied to everybody that put @ to me, but oh well.

I focus on utilizing Twitter as a business tool for like minded professionals. I don't mind if they do not respond. I make better connections through other social media. I think most got caught up in the "instant gratification" of the response and the goal high follower counts.

I agree with a few of the commenters. Connections are harder to make than I anticipated and it is becoming more of a broadcast system and information system than a true two-way communication vehicle.

There are obviously exceptions to this but unless you follow a very small set of people, it is nearly impossible to consistently and effectively interact with everyone. There clearly is a possibility of a burnout in the future as more and more people broadcast versus interact and we are all flooded with too much information.

I’ve been using Twitter for about 6 months now. Although I try to respond to people, I dont mind is people dont respond to mine. Far too much simultaneous activity going on. It’s impossible to read every single tweet of each person you follow so I dont understand why people are so proud of having thousands of followers..

I flat out prefer a response. I realize there are "items" I follow to which I won't get a response. (Huffington Post.) But, if I find myself following someone who posts overly frequent "collectables" (quotes, news links in which I'm not interested) etc. I drop them quickly. I'm on Twitter to converse.

Maybe it's just me, but it feels like it's headed for burnout. I get a few people that tweet a lot and it obscures the rare-but-good tweets from other people. I only follow 30 people on my personal account and I've already unfollowed the ones who seem to have the 'post' button on rapid fire mode.

@Andy Beal - can you really follow 175 people?

I think @Dean has it nailed. We're all indulging our need to talk and pretending people are listening.

@Dean & Christina - you can probably blame it on the desire to follow as many people as possible. I only follow 175, which keeps my intake low enough that I can engage, when engaged.

I agree that we don’t have a real connection. I found it very hard to approach my followers and the people I follow. (Nobody answers my questions when I ask something, as a matter of fact…) I basically give lessons to everyone, submitting my informative articles. Twitter is helping me become known. Many people follow me because I keep submitting articles and providing good information, but there are no connections, especially because I don’t spend any time trying to make them.

I am starting to wonder if this "Social Media is a cocktail party" thing isn't more like a lot of people talking and no one really engaging - that is one dysfunctional cocktail party.

Funny thing Andy, I don't find these stats all that surprising. I've had a really hard time using Twitter, it appears to be a lot more about people Twittering *at* me, rather that with me.
