Facebook has been especially on top of this with mobile text updates. It makes it very simple to update and receive status updated on your cell phone -without- using any data plan. My own sister uses it and loves it and updates are near instant and just work like they should. That’s a surprise and certainly a growing trend – doubling in the last quarter. I must admit that I haven’t tried it yet myself, mainly because not only am I all thumbs but I never thought they’d be able to adequately optimize the layout to fit enough useful data on the small screen.

Perhaps the jump is because they’ve managed to strike a good balance with layout and information. Time to take a closer look…
