The Blogosphere is Alive with the Sound of Marketers

While Twitter and Facebook are all the rage with your average internet user, blogs are still going strong in the corporate world.

According to a study by eMarketer, 34% of all US companies have a public blog and they project 45% by 2012. That’s up tremendously from 2007 which lands at only 16%.

“Studies have shown that marketers perceive blogs to have the highest value of any social media in driving site traffic, brand awareness, lead generation and sales—as well as improving customer service.”

The study suggests that there is a larger number of blogs devoted to smaller companies, where larger companies may be lagging due to legal and logistical issues. It’s a lot easier for George to upload an off-the-cuff blog post when he’s the CEO of a two man company than it is for a VP at Procter and Gamble to make his thoughts known.

One of the biggest benefits of blogging over micro-blogging is the evergreen nature. A blog post is searchable and indexable as long as blog site shall live. That means consumers can easily revisit the information a month from now or a year from now. Try doing that with a Facebook post or a Twitter message that’s more than a month old.

Ideally, a combination of social media messaging is the way to go. A Twitter tweet leads readers to the blog post which leads them on to the Facebook via a “like” button at the top of the post. Of course, for all of this to work as it should, you have to have something interesting to say and that’s the hardest part of blogging.

    Yes the increase in the amount of blog posts is amazing. I think that Facebook and to a lesser degree Twitter have a place but there is certainly a place for blogging. As you say, blogs are much easier to search. Social media is still very much alive but has to be use in combination with Blogging.

    Blogging remains a bigger paltform that has provided a much bigger platform to social networking sites like facebook and microblogging site twitter. Blogging acts a very strong link between social networking channels.

    For me these social networks are a means to share the important piece of information published on blog or articles, PR quicky rather at one go among thousands of users and friends in a very crispy manner saving web space, providing a very clear and clean view to viewers t follow link if want to get the full story. Both blogging and social networking are equally important to each other as blogs get more stronger visibility with thse facebook, twitter.

    I do a lot of company blogging and I know from experience that the most successful blogs are the ones that do not read like a piece of PR. That’s the great thing about writing company blogs. I try to tone down my diction, but in general, blogging affords me far more creative freedom than I would have in any other format. Hopefully visitors read my blogs as something altogether separate from the company itself because that’s the only way to ensure that blogs maintain their credibility.

    It’s pretty hard to stay relevant and not sound like a giant advertisement, which is probably why my boss gives me such expansive leeway in terms of the content. I see blogs on tons of sites that will never really help boost SEO because they’re obviously total fluff. Most companies don’t permit the kind of things I say, but they probably should. It sure makes me feel better about what I do for a living. And it’s enjoyable, to me at least.
