Scott Stratten is not your normal marketer.

Actually, he may even take offense at being called a “marketer.” Instead, he’s known as the “UnMarketer” and his book UnMarketing: Stop Marketing. Start Engaging, just hit bookstores today.

I had the pleasure of seeing Scott keynote PubCon South and I’ve been in constant awe of this enticing, engaging, and …Canadian unmarketer ever since. His book will be a bestseller, there’s no doubt about it, and the book’s description should give you an idea why:

For generations, marketing has been hypocritical. We’ve been taught to market to others in ways we hate being marketed to (cold-calling, flyers, ads, etc.). So why do we still keep trying the same stale marketing moves?

UnMarketing shows you how to unlearn the old ways and consistently attract and engage the right customers. You’ll stop just pushing out your message and praying that it sticks somewhere. Potential and current customers want to be listened to, validated, and have a platform to be heard-especially online. With UnMarketing, you’ll create such a relationship with your customers, and make yourself the logical choice for their needs.

As I said, the book launch is today, but three lucky winners will get their hands on a free copy thanks to our pestering collaboration with Scott.

Want a copy?

How to enter this contest: Simply leave a comment below and we’ll randomly pick 3 winners (deadline for entry is 6pm ET this Wednesday).

That’s all you need to do! And, if you don’t win, you can grab a copy from

Congrats to our three winners!

  • Brian Blatnicki

I’m truely looking to better understand how to market to, and offer value to, and truly engage both existing followers and potential followers for our organization!

  • Ralf

I also prefer the unconditional ways of marketing. Surely this book can give a lot of inspirations and lets you think twice about what customers are and how you can communicate. Would love to get this book.

  • He’s coming to Buffalo to speak later this month and I am looking forward to hearing him.
Can’t wait to get my hands on the book either.

  • I am a heavy library user and have already sent a request to my local public library to purchase this one.

As the sales and marketing representative for both a mixed media arts studio and a yearly volunteer run convention I understand that marketing is all about creating relationships with people. Cold calling is not even a part of our marketing plan. I try to deal only with warm leads and introductions.

I’m looking forward to reading this book and glean some new ways to reach a loyal audience. And a few good talking points to bring up with my co-workers and bosses when they ask if I’ve done any knocking on doors lately!

  • Considering this to be my official entry!

  • Lisa Jordan

LOVE Scott Stratten ! I follow him on Twitter and read his blogs!

  • Dana Mason

Count me in. There’s so much I need to know on this subject. My understanding is superficial so this would be a definite asset. Don’t know if he coined “un-marketing” but I like it.

  • Looks like a good read!

  • Here’s my UnComment to win Scott’s fantastic new UnBook!

  • if it also comes to Barcelona I would love to have one 🙂

  • Sign me up

  • Ooh, yes please, I’m itching to read this.

  • I’ve been waiting for this one – super excited to read and share! 🙂

  • Nice! Would love to win a copy of the book.

  • Shelby Garlock

I’d love to get a copy of this!

  • I’d love a copy! The spam math is always a challenge for me, by the way. 😉

  • Melissa

I cannot wait to check out this book! I’ve heard UnMarketing speak twice now and he has so much insight on using social media (especially twitter) to help build your business. Hopefully I win a copy, so I can learn even more from him ;o) *crosses fingers*

  • Was just about to press “yes” to purchase the book on Amazon, when I saw this contest – here’s my official ” I hope I can win it for free” entry!

  • I would also live a copy of this excellent book!

  • Alyson

Really looking forward to getting my hands on this. My role just changed to an engagement focus so I’ll be looking for tips and suggestions on how to effectively engage our supporter base.

  • Now I want to read a full library of un-books to prepare every individual for the “Flow Society”, regardless of current geolocation:

    – Unconferencing. Stop Parroting. Start Sharing.
    – Unmanaging. Stop Controlling. Start Collaborating.
    – Unlearning. Stop Repeating. Start Discovering.
    – Unfinancing. Stop Investing. Start Resourcing.
    – Unofficing. Stop Commuting. Start Living.

    – Unauthoring. Stop Single-Writing. Start Crowd-Creating.

    😉 😛

Which one to start with – together 🙂 ?

    • I vote for “UnMeeting” (combination of UnConferencing/UnOfficing?). The subtitle would be, “Your Brain: Use It or Lose It.”

  • Amy Smith

After following Scott on Twitter for so long and enjoying his Tweets, as well as his email newsletter (very informative and great, BTW), I would LOVE to win a copy of this book! He’s engaging, bright and informative, and, based on his blog, he’s a great UnDad, too!

  • laure moyle

Hi, realise the list is long by now but I’d love a copy please. Will retweet as requested…even if that logically dilutes my chances of winning- lets consider it a bit of fair play in the viral world! 🙂

  • Dexter

I don’t even read books, but I want to read this one.

  • MArti

Looking forward to reading it next week.

  • Sounds like a great read. Even though I’m currently reading 6 books, I’d love to add this one to the stack. 🙂

  • Perfect timing for this book! “Engaging” means you have to consistently take time and be involved. Marketing as most think of it is set and forget. That’s why so many of my clients are having a hard time using social media to their advantage — they just don’t want to spend the time necessary to effectively engage their market!

Would love to read this book to see Scott’s POV. Thanks for the opportunity!

  • Wayne

This would be a great addition to my library!

  • I’m looking forward to reading this book. Would love a copy!

  • Francisc

I am in the industry and I’m always looking for new ways to reach costumers and creating long term relationships.

    I’d love to win a copy! 🙂

  • Scott Vogelsberg

“Customer engagement” is certainly a hot buzzword. Looking forward to hearing more about what’s really behind it.

  • Elizabeth

That sounds like an awesome book to read.

  • Liz

I’ve been thinking about this since getting into the marketing field. I find alternative methods of marketing extremely interesting – especially in an age where we have the capabilities to broadcast directly to people who are looking for/interested in our products. I’d love to read the book in its entirety.

  • Andy,

If you don’t reply to my specific comment should I consider the notion that you aren’t using unmarketing techniques here? 🙂

Count me in for the book drawing!

  • Steph

    thanks for the contest!

  • I’ve been looking forward to Scott’s book. I like his style and am interested to hear what he has to say that can help me and my clients. Thanks for the contest!

  • Alex

  • I’d like to enter too, please! And win, even! 😀 I’ve been following the book development.

  • Kevin Grout

Well, the odds here are getting to be like those for winning the lottery. If I win the lottery, I’ll just buy the book. If I win this, I’ll still be very happy 🙂

  • Congrats on the book, Scott, and best with your tour!

  • Show me the UnBook! I want to donate the UnBook to our local library here in Western North Carolina. That way others can share in Scott’s awesomeness. A high 5 and 20 awesome points if I win one of the books.

  • I’m excited to read “Scott’s Thoughts”. The conversation around (un)marketing is an important one, though I’m of the opinion that if you aren’t engaging, you aren’t marketing (effectively anyway)!

  • I’d love to win a copy of Scott’s book!

  • andrea kelly

    Please enter me!

  • Wow – Finally get a poll of how many people are reading your blog. Nothing like Freebait.

  • Daniel Helbling

Conceptual breakthrough? I love it. Paradigm busting? I’m there.

I’m so excited for this book. I tend to beat myself up for not doing more “traditional” marketing efforts but something always stops me from pursuing that path, as I hate to be marketed to that way. I follow Scott on Twitter & think his book will be exactly what I need to finally take ownership of my choice to forgo traditional marketing routes.

  • Sign me up for that draw!

  • Rebekah

  • I’d love to win a copy so once I buy it I have an extra to give away.

  • Rick

Always on the lookout for new approaches – especially ones that are people orientated instead of “marketeer ego orientated”. Put my name down for a chance to win please, I’m in New Zealand so happy to cover any additional frieght costs if I’m one of the lucky ones when the three names are drawn.

  • I had a chance to see Scott speak at Digital Leap in Toronto this past April. He was speaking about the use of social media for nonprofits and it was fantastic! I believe there is a full recording of the talk on his site if you’re interested.

  • It’s look very interesting to read, even I don’t think that we have to stop doing marketing, but I agree that we have to try to engage more. Interacting and building relationships with customers is the key to delivering unprecedented ROI

  • Mike O

I’ll tweet about it, but only if I win!

  • Even if I don’t win I’ll be picking this one up. (Through your amazon link of course, since I read your newsletter daily). But I’d love to win.

The question of whether or not technology can or will change culture has been answered. It helps that brilliant people are naming the changes already happening, and needed.
