In order to promote their new Groupon Now service, Groupon is offering a number of dollar deals for folks in the Chicago area. $1 for $10 meal at Manny’s Coffee Shop and Deli, $1 for $18 at Baba Pizza and Pasta, or perhaps you’d like to pay $1 for beers at Grace Street Tap.

The promotion is running today only, but if it’s successful, it’s likely Groupon will repeat it when they open Now in other cities. It’s also assumed that Groupon is picking up the tab for the discount, but that’s not for sure.

Groupon Now is a variation on the daily deal site that preys on hungry, bored people who don’t want to plan ahead. It’s heavily mobile-dependent, using your current location to offer you deals in your area.

Michael Shim, Groupon VP for Mobile Partnerships Michael Shim was quoted as saying,

“Mobile is huge for Groupon. I believe we could see us doing 50 percent of deals sold/purchased in the next couple of years.”

Groupon says that Now is also better for venues who need to control traffic flow because they’ll have the option of offering deals only during non-peek hours or when they know they’ll have the staff to cover. That could prevent many of the problems smaller businesses have had with traditional Groupon ads.

For those who live in a large urban area, Groupon Now and other instant deal sites can be a great tool for users and a smart ad buy for businesses. With everyone trying to stretch a buck, it’s easy to imagine a group of friends consulting the deal site before deciding where to eat. It’s the ultimate suggestive sell.

Are you in the Chicago area? We’d love to hear about your experience with Groupon Now’s Dollar Day promo.
