Meebo is the company that makes that sharing bar you see at the bottom of many sites. The bar can be customized to show recent activity, offer chat options and present promotional campaigns. The new bar, which launches later this week, has the ability to reward users who visit a site multiple times.
The new widget uses a “super secret algorithm” to determine if a person is a VIP visitor. If so, the widget pops up in the bottom corner with a discount or link to special content.
Currently, Meebo is active on 8,000 websites. The check-in version will be rolled out slowly beginning with Pepboys.com and Geekosystem.com and MichaJesse.com.
In addition, Meebo has also been trying a new idea called Quests, where websurfers are asked to go on a virtual scavenger hunt in order to win badges. In honor of Internet Week New York, Meebo is currently running the “True New Yorker Quest” and they’ll be releasing a special “Created by You” quest with suggestions from the folks at the conference.
What Meebo’s doing is combining gamification marketing with the allure of daily deal and check-in sites. It’s a nice mix that also includes a mobile component. Sounds like they’ve got all the bases covered.
