Pinterest’s new partner is Getty Images. You know, the people who own a tremendous amount of online images that everyone co-ops and uses without paying the required fee. Before anyone throws stones, let me say that I try to do the right thing when sourcing photos here or on any of my blogs, but it’s a tricky business. Once a photo is out there, it’s often impossible to find the original source. When I use a photo from a site like Stock.XCHNG, I’m putting my faith in the people who uploaded the photo in the first place. What more can you do?
Let’s get back to Pinterest:
Here’s their photo example of how the new Getty arrangement will work. (Which I’ve borrowed on the assumption that it’s an example for the press to use.)
Getty’s mechanical eyeballs will scan Pinterest to find photos that came from their stock. It will then tag on a set of data fields showing the caption, the photographer, the collection and credit info.
Now here’s Pinterest explaining why this is in your best interests:
For example, you may stumble across a pin of a delicious dish that strikes you as something you might like to make someday. Unfortunately, if the original pinner uploaded the image and skimped on the description or if the link is broken, we probably couldn’t tell you that it’s scallops with brussels sprouts, chorizo and mustard fondue. Also, if you searched for “scallops with brussels sprouts,” we wouldn’t know that this great image by Getty Images contributor Thomas Barwick is a match. With Getty Images’ help, we hope to be able to make this image more useful and suggest another recipe with scallops and brussels sprouts or healthy scallop recipes.
I’m not sure that I’d ever have a desperate need to identify a plate of food, but it would be helpful to know the name of a celeb in a photo and details of the event.
As a side note, that photo is making me hungry. Need to wrap this up and get lunch.

Interesting. The way I read that, Getty is tired of having their photos show up on Pinterest and rather than play the boy with the finger in the dike they’ve agreed to allow Pinterest to pay for the actions of their members.
