Over at SEL – yes, no hard feelings here – Garrett discusses Yahoo’s acquisition of Upcoming.org. He believes that Yahoo simply needs to package together recent acquisitions to get ahead of the competition.
If Yahoo can tie/patch/duct tape together 360, upcoming.org and Flikr (which is an energetic and vibrant community in its own right) we may see a major MySpace competitor from Yahoo in a year or two. Especially if they can beat MySpace in functionality, which frankly shouldn’t be all that tough.

eWeek brings disturbing news of a new phishing effort posing as a Google toolbar download.
The latest cases involve bogus Google software spread via IM, and appear to be a variety of the infamous CoolWebSearch phishing scheme, according to Foster City-Calif.-based FaceTime Security Labs. CoolWebSearch has never been spread via IM before.
And what happens when you download the fake toolbar?
The only working feature on the fake Google Toolbar saves credit card details, according to Christopher Boyd, the security research manager of Foster City, Calif.-based FaceTime Security Labs. A bevy of others, including one to “enable pornographic ads,” do not work.
The toolbar is being spread by instant messenger, so keep an eye open for them.

The hybrid service blends addresses, phone numbers, maps, driving directions and other details, like user reviews and credit card information, on the same Web page. Google also offers a satellite-mapping option that provides an aerial view.
paidContent is reporting the sale of Weblogs Inc to America Online.
How much will Weblogs Inc. cost AOL? One estimate I heard today was roughly $20 million as an earn-out — to get it all, Weblogs Inc. would have to meet certain goals. But I’ve also heard talk of Flickr-like numbers, which would make it closer to $30-35 million range. Certainly to Weblogs’ execs advantage to have people thinking towards the higher end.
