Google Blog Search Not There Yet

Rubel points to a BusinessWeek review of Google Blog Search. Too many spam blogs and a not very comprehensive index are among the main criticisms.

Now that Google is in the middle of the spamosphere, perhaps it will focus its prodigious brainpower into vanquishing the spam bots and their pollution. For now, though, Google’s entrée into blog search doesn’t change much. I’ll be using the engine from time to time, especially its useful tool to find relevant blogs. But even with Google in the mix, blog search is still very much a work in progress.

Paid Search Expected to Outpace Display By 2010

Paid Search continues to grow at a frantic pace, according to ClickZ.

The category accounted for 34 percent of total online ad spending in 2004, or $4.2 billion in spending. In 2009, paid search will draw even with display advertising, with both bringing in around $6.9 billion. By 2010, paid search, including paid listings and paid inclusion, is expected to equal 40 percent of the online ad spend, or $7.5 billion.

IAC Kills the Ask Jeeves Butler

IAC is changing the name of Ask Jeeves to simply Ask.com. As a result, the company is dropping the mascot.

Google Uses Blog to Defend Print Lawsuit

Battelle likes the fact that Google is using its own blog to defend the recent lawsuit filed by the Authors Guild.

Let’s be clear: Google doesn’t show even a single page to users who find copyrighted books through this program (unless the copyright holder gives us permission to show more). At most we show only a brief snippet of text where their search term appears, along with basic bibliographic information and several links to online booksellers and libraries.

BBC Launches Its Biggest Online Marketing Campaign

According to NMA (via Adverblog), the BBC is about to embark on its most ambitious online marketing effort yet.

The creative will take live RSS feeds from BBC news sites and link in with IM services. Users of MSN Messenger in Europe and ICQ in the US will be able to sign up to a world news feed, with the service promoted across the MSN network and ICQ.

If a major news story breaks the advertising will be increased with instantly updated creative across rich media overlay and standard banner ads with bespoke messaging and imagery.

Aunty Beeb will conduct the campaign for 6 months and will target Western Europe and the US.
