Google Sheets Improvements

While most might think that improvements to Google Sheets is not marketing news it might be for those who have to crunch numbers (which are the ones doing the real marketing work, let’s be honest).

Also, anything that makes Google even more of a competitor to Microsoft should be of interest to everyone. Why? The more Google provides better and better services the more people will be even more Google centric than they already are which just perpetuates the continued theme of “It’s a google world and we are allowed to live in it.”

So what changes have been made.Take a look at this video from the Official Google blog.

Google is one company that simply doesn’t rest on its laurels (for the most part). Many of us have to make decisions on a daily basis as to how much we want to be ‘married’ to Google.

Gmail Offers a Picture Show

By the end of the early part of 2014 you will be able to view pictures automatically in Gmail across all platforms. So long, ‘always display images from’ type messages.

Images in Gmail

The Official Gmail blog tells us more

But thanks to new improvements in how Gmail handles images, you’ll soon see all images displayed in your messages automatically across desktop, iOS and Android. Instead of serving images directly from their original external host servers, Gmail will now serve all images through Google’s own secure proxy servers.

So what does this mean for you? Simple: your messages are more safe and secure, your images are checked for known viruses or malware, and you’ll never have to press that pesky “display images below” link again. With this new change, your email will now be safer, faster and more beautiful than ever.

Google Says If the Ad Can’t Be Seen Then You Don’t Pay

Google is doing something that might have other ad networks in a tizzy by announcing that only ads that are viewable (50% of the ad for at least 1 second) will be paid for by advertisers.

From the Inside AdWords blog

Today, we’re taking an important step towards this goal by making it possible to buy based on viewability — in real time — across the more than two million sites in the Google Display Network. Viewability was already available for reservations buys on the Google Display Network, now this solution is available in the auction on a CPM basis globally as well, across desktop, mobile and tablet. In other words, you can now choose to pay for ONLY those impressions where your ad has a chance to be seen.

Google really has a chance to change how advertising is bought and sold if this works well and it could put real pressure on the rest of the industry to do as well.

Twitter’s Broad Match Helps Advertisers Spend Cash!

How many times over the years have advertisers wondered just how many dollars they flushed down the Adwords drain as a result of broad match? Let’s just say it’s more than a couple …… thousand…….. times.

Now Twitter is offering to allow advertisers to spend more money than they budget by offering their own broad match. The Twitter blog tells us

Today, we’re excited to share a significant improvement to keyword targeting on Twitter with the launch of broad match for keywords.

Twitter users have conversations about topics in a number of different ways, and the same intent can be expressed by using synonyms, different spellings, or Twitter-specific lingo. Broad match makes it easier for advertisers to reach users having these conversations by automatically expanding their targeted keywords to include related terms.

AdSense Offers 434,216 New Ad Unit Sizes

AdSense has introduced the next step in responsive ads which is customer ad sizes.

A post on he AdSense blog tells us

Today, we’re happy to announce the launch of 434,216 new ad unit sizes! Or in other words, we’ve just made it possible to create custom ad sizes to give you more flexibility and enable you to better design your content for your users.

Custom sized ads behave just like their standard size counterparts, showing a text or display ad depending on which is likely to have the best performance for the impression.

For text ads, we’ll determine the optimal number of text ads to display for a given impression, and show the ads the same way they appear inside standard sizes. Our system predicts the value of each competing ad for every impression, based on historic performance and comparison across a variety of scenarios. For unique ad unit sizes, our system will need some time before it can optimize the number of ads shown.

This is how those text ads might look

Photos Now in Twitter Direct Messages

Let’s face it. Life will never be the same.

Twitter is now letting pictures in direct messages. What else is there to say. It’s simply amazing and I know most of us will never be the same.

Too much? Sorry. Despite my over the top ‘reaction’ Twitter has really gone and done this as well letting users swipe between timelines. I am getting goose bumps.

From the Twitter blog

For the first time, you can share and view photos via direct message (DM) on your mobile phone. We’ve also introduced a new tab in the navigation bar that makes it easy to access DMs –– they’re just one tap away from wherever you are on Twitter. You can also view photos in DMs on twitter.com.
