Smarter.com Launches Color Matching Search Tool

Online shopping search engine, Smarter.com, has announced a cool new feature: Visual Search Beta. Aimed at those shopping for clothing, Visual Search allows shoppers to select a type of clothing, then search by color using a color-wheel. It’s hard to explain, but easier to demonstrate.

Google Secretly Working with the CIA?

Nothing like some conspiracy to start off your working day. Nate Anderson has a juicy rumor that Google is secretly working the US government, including the CIA. While, there’s no official confirmation or denial from either the government or Google, former intelligence officer Robert David Steele has made the claim…

“Google has made a very important strategic mistake in dealing with the secret elements of the U.S. government—that is a huge mistake and I’m hoping they’ll work their way out of it and basically cut that relationship off.” In his view, Google’s attempt earlier this year to avoid turning over information to the Department of Justice was little more than a hypocritical charade.

Tracking 404 Pages with Google Analytics

Switching blogging platforms has introduced me to some unique problems and some cool tools. One of the problems I had to find a solution for was tracking 404 errors using Google Analytics. As GA is a script based analytics tool, I figured I would need to find a new solution that used the site logs instead.

A quick “google” later and I discover Google Analytics has already thought of this problem and created a solution.

So, for all of GA users, here’s your solution for tracking 404 errors, whether you’re switching blog interfaces, or not. :-)

Google Planning to Consolidate Account Management?

MarketingVOX points to a DMNews rumor that Google may soon consolidate account management and move towards one account directory per account.

One of our very credible reporters here at DM News had a chat with a certain Google person last week, which suggested that the company is about to set up an IBM-like structure. What this means is that there would be one global account director per account, that pulls in resources to sell as needed – PPC, Print, Radio, Video, Display, etc.

Certainly makes sense. If you’re planning a TV and print campaign, you would sure hope your account manager would know what to do with your AdWords campaign!

If You “google”, You Must Be Spanked!

Google’s stepping-up its efforts to stop people from using “google” as a verb. They’ve posted a correct useage guide on the official Google blog, in an attempt to gently persuade people to not use Google incorrectly.

Usage: ‘Google’ as verb referring to searching for information via any conduit other than Google.
Example: “I googled him on Yahoo and he seems pretty interesting.”
Our lawyers say: Bad. Very, very bad. You can only “Google” on the Google search engine. If you absolutely must use one of our competitors, please feel free to “search” on Yahoo or any other search engine.

I applaud the attempt, after all, Google must show that it is at least trying to police its trademark – important, if you want to keep it – but with hundreds of millions of users, it’s unlikely they’ll win this battle.

Yahoo Launches Search Marketing Blog

It’s finally here; Yahoo has indeed launched the Yahoo Search Marketing Blog.

Here’s the official word:-

Yahoo Launches Panama Interface

As you read this, Yahoo is announcing the launch of their long-awaited Panama interface for search marketing, replacing the system that has been in place since the acquisition of Overture.

The full roll-out of the Panama’s ranking algorithm will not launch until the first quarter of 2007, but Yahoo Search Marketing advertisers can choose to migrate to the new interface over the coming months, in anticipation of the full launch. Migration will be via invite, but advertisers can also request a faster switch. They’ll get a chance to preview the new interface before switching, but those deciding to switch will find the migration in not reversible.
