SunRocket Giving Bloggers a Bad Name

How many of you were offended with the Forbes article that labelled bloggers as an “online lynch mob spouting liberty but spewing lies, libel and invective.”

Well, contests like “Everyday Hogwash” certainly don’t help. The contest encourages bloggers to complain about businesses in hope of winning prizes. That’s terrible.

Why do we want to encourage just the complainers? Why reinforce the negative image of bloggers? Surely the sponsor SunRocket could get the same publicity by encouraging both negative AND positive comments?

I think this reflects badly on SunRocket, so, ironically, consider this my entry to the contest.

SunRocket = Everday Hogwash! If I win, I’ll donate the money to Vonage! ;-)

CBS and NBC Track Blog Buzz

Both CBS and NBC have launched new initiatives to track the most popular stories in the blogosphere.

CBS – With millions of sites floating through the blogosphere, who really has time to peek at even a fraction of them … especially if you’d like to keep your job. So Blogophile reads them for you with the weekly roundup of the buzz on must-read blogs. Blogophile is written by’s Melissa P. McNamara.

NBC – So for this [NBC Dateline] segment, we read through some of the postings online and enlisted the help of two companies that monitor Internet buzz (Technorati and Blogpulse) to find the most blogged-about topics on the ‘Net this week.

Europe Wants Its Own Google

AP reports that a consortium of French and German techies are putting together Quaero, Europe’s answer to Google.

Quaero epitomizes European ambitions especially for French President Jacques Chirac of creating alternatives to U.S. technological prowess. But facing off against super-rich, super-talented U.S. companies may prove daunting for the cumbersome consortium of European companies and public agencies hatching Quaero.

Quaero will not just be another search engine but will offer a set of tools for translating, identifying and indexing images, sound and text.

It’s almost sad to watch the French get so obsessed about the dominance of American technology. Why do they have to compete with Google just because it is American? Then again, they’re not alone, just look at the Japanese.

iPod-Ready Levi Jeans

Did April Fools day come early? According to Reuters

Denim giant Levi Strauss said on Tuesday it had designed jeans compatible with the iPod music player, featuring a joystick in the watch pocket to operate the device.

The Levi’s RedWire DLX Jeans for men and women, which will be available this fall, also have a built-in docking cradle for the iPod and retractable headphones. Pricing was not immediately available.

Lots of third-grade jokes to be made from that statement…not going there. ;-)

AOL’s Newly Acquired Truveo Better than Google Video?

Bambi Francisco believes that Truveo (acquired today by AOL) is a better video search technology than Google Video.

Google’s search technology behind the video service fails to live up to Google’s high search standards for text.

Type in the words “CES” and the first video is totally unrelated as it’s a nine-second video of a guitar player. The only relevant video was the sixth one shown, and it was essentially a video press release.

By comparison, type in “CES” in, a startup with 12 engineers focusing on nothing but perfecting video search, and the first one is a very relevant video clip, dated Sunday, Jan. 8, of a CNN report on the tech fest. In fact, Truveo had a minimum of 100 relevant videos related to the consumer show.
